Recently, the CBC Board asked me to take over the management of online services, as well as maintenance of other technology at the Club. I would like to thank the club for this opportunity, and I will do my best to fulfill the responsibilities of this task.
Before commenting on this project, I would like to join with other Club members in thanking Don Claunch for all of his work in past years in getting the technology/website at the club set up and running smoothly. As he stated in his post on Facebook, the original goal was only to provide information for club members, and a way to host a webcam. Personally, I would like to thank Don for all of his time and effort, not only in getting the tech/website to where it is today, but also for his tremendous help in transferring everything over to me. Don has been nothing but supportive, professional, and gracious in implementing that exchange. I haven’t had time to totally crystallize what we (the club community) should do and how we should do it, in terms of technology, but here are a few first thoughts… I think it’s obvious to most people that technology has evolved along a personal/mobile path of accessing information. This means we will need to improve wifi access at the club if providing wifi service to members is a goal we want to pursue. In addition, I think it would be beneficial if we could figure out new and better ways to use technology/connectivity to improve the quality and efficiency of club services. Making online services the primary way the club communicates with its members seems a logical next step in our progression of technology adoption. Having said that, it is important to build our technology services in such a way that whomever takes over the management responsibilities in the future, can do so with a minimal amount of technical expertise and training. At the same time, we want to make sure we build in redundancy and security into our tech systems. As a starting point, we have completed a few housekeeping tasks:
I would like to thank Dave Desch (and son) for making most of the above happen. Dave has spent many hours volunteering his time to make our first improvements in tech at the club (during 2017 season). This winter I will be working on updating the website. In the meantime, our current website, while available, will see few if any changes. I hope to have the new website up and running by March. If you have any suggestions about what should be included, or how we should use the website, please let me know. Thanks to the board for their support with this project. Dave H. |
